Blog – Choosing a DIN rail power supply? Look beyond voltage and power
A DIN rail power supply is often selected on the basis of output voltage and power. This makes sense, but in practice, there are many other factors that determine whether an installation will continue to function reliably for years to come.
After all, a power supply forms the foundation of industrial control systems. If this component is not sufficiently tailored to the application, voltage drops, malfunctions and unplanned downtime can occur.
Where things often go wrong
It is precisely the factors not covered in the datasheet that are regularly underestimated. These include:
- Peak currents during equipment start-up
- Derating due to higher ambient temperatures
- Insufficient attention to EMC and earthing
- Lack of capacity for future expansions
- These aspects have a direct impact on the reliability and availability of an installation.
Start with the practical application, not the type plate
The best power supply solution is achieved by looking at the installation as a whole.
As well as power, temperature, safety features, mains voltage quality, diagnostic capabilities and expandability also play an important role. By taking these factors into account in advance, you can avoid high costs and the need for retrofitting.
